We all have Spirit Guides and/or Guardian Angels that are available to assist us in our daily lives. Spirit Guides and Guardian Angels are considered synonymous by some and different by others. Those who see them as different believe that Spirit Guides have been in body before and have had experiences similar to what we are expected to go through. On the other hand, Guardian Angels have never had a physical body. Deceased loved ones can also act as our guides for a period of time. All are available and willing to help us, but we need to learn to communicate with them to receive their help.

Guides are in soul or spirit form and not in physical form. They are discarnate spirits who watch, heal, teach and help us in our physical journey. They help us plan the life we are about to live and help us along the way. Our guides are not in body so they can appear in many different ways. If you are religious, they may appear as angels. Native Indians often have animals as guides. Those who follow the teachings of Silvia Brown may expect their guides to be Hindu-like in appearance. Guides may even appear as spiritual places.

Contacting and communicating with Spirit Guides is a well a established practice. Mediums or psychics like Edgar Cayce and Jane Roberts are two of the better know authors who have written about their connection with Spirit Guides. Most therapists who offer past life regression therapy also offer instruction on how to meet one’s guides. Brian Weiss, a notable psychiatrist, discusses contacting Spirit Guides in his book, “Messages From The Masters”. Silvia Brown has written several books dealing with Spirit Guide contact. Michael Newton in his book, “Life Between Lives” talks about how we plan for a future life with our Guides.

There are numerous accounts of someone who dies appearing to the one they love at the moment of their death. Strong love connections in one life are rekindled in a future life when souls reincarnate together again. Books like “Past Lives, Future Loves” and “You Are Born to be Together Again” embrace this belief. Love is a strong force which forges a powerful bond that transcends death. It is not surprising then that someone who departs this life will wish to act as a Guide for the ones they love.

If we accept the fact that it is possible to communicate with our Guides and the conviction that recently deceased souls may act as Guides for the ones they love, then it follows naturally that we should be able to communicate with those recently departed loved ones. And in fact, we can. Moreover, it is very comforting and rewarding to do so. It almost always eases the process of grieving and permits the person to get on with their life. You may wish to read some accounts of those who have had that experience. (see: “Contacting the Departed” at my web site).

In 1985, I was approached by an acquaintance of mine to do a show on Past Life Regression. He was associated with our local community cable network. He would bring someone I didn’t know to be regressed; and if successful, he would film a subsequent regression. He wanted to make sure that everything was on the up-and-up.

He brought a young man who co-hosted a Friday night music video show. This young man was dressed in designer jeans, an open necked shirt with sleeves partly rolled up, a long scarf wrapped around his neck and draped down his back, and boots. He was very cool! I think the two of them were somewhat skeptical. My friend remained in the waiting room while the young man and I went into my office to proceed with the regression. Following a short pre-talk, I hypnotized him and regressed him back to a past life.

The first scene we came to in the regression was taking place in a bomber flying over Germany during WWII. He saw himself as the pilot of the plane and it was his first mission. He was extremely nervous which one could clearly hear in his voice. I asked him what was happening. He replied, “There are lights ahead, someone is shouting ‘Enemy planes approaching fast!’ Over target – Bombs dropping –Plane’s lighter – turn around fast – get out of here.” He was clearly re-experiencing quite a traumatic scene. Amazingly, once he was out of danger and on his way back to base, his voice calmed right down.

I was able to get some further information from him once he had safely landed. His name was Roy Buchan (not sure of last name), his rank was Pilot Officer, and the date was 1944. I did get more information from “Roy” although he was reluctant to divulge certain information. He told me after the regression that even though part of him new that it was me asking the questions, “Roy” did not want to answer because he kept on seeing posters saying, “Loose lips sink ships”. Roy did tell me that he was flying a Stirling Bomber and that it took a crew of seven. He would not tell me where he was stationed. He had a girl friend, but would not tell me her name.

I found out that Roy had joined the RAF in 1939 as a mechanic. He reluctantly trained as a pilot saying that he did so because they needed pilots and it was his duty. Roy was 25 when he took his first solo flight. All he did was to circle the airfield and land. Before his first mission, the crew assembled to have a picture taken for the record. I asked Roy what he did before take-off. He said, “Check load, check oxygen, check radio, check crew, check armourment, check power, check fuel.” I asked Roy how he felt about his first mission. He replied, “Scary. Got to be done.”

I took Roy forward to his third mission which I knew was his last. Again, they were flying over Germany. He refused to tell me what his target was. Once again I could hear the fear in Roy’s trembling voice. “Plane pulling down to right.” “Plane’s hit.” “Fire, smoke – smells funny.” “Have to drop bombs.” “Crew injured.” “Something broke – straight down – spinning around.” Nothing! Roy died that night.

When the regression was finished, the young man was visibly shaken. He had not expected to have an experience that was so real and emotional. My friend and I were ready to film a second regression after we had listened to the recording of this regression. Both he and I felt that it would be a powerful show. The young man, however, decided that he did not want to have a regression filmed. Perhaps the experience was too personal for him to share, or perhaps the ‘honor and duty’ character of Roy’s did not fit the persona of a Friday Night Video host.

A young woman came to see me for a regression. She was a demur, soft-spoken music teacher who wished to explore her past lives. She was a good subject and easily achieved a reasonable level of trance. I regressed her back in time to a past life of her subconscious mind’s choice. She had some difficulty getting oriented to where she was at first. Apparently, she was unsure as to whether it was day or night. Gradually, she realized that it was day time as she could see a ship anchored in the distance. She realized that she was in a dark cave looking out toward a ship.

I asked her to become aware of herself and her surroundings. Was she by herself or with others; was she male or female; what name did she go by; how old; what year; etc. Things were not as yet clear for her. She knew she was male and that there were other males with her, but nothing else seemed to be clear. Slowly, she came to realize that she was the Captain of the ship but still there was no name.

I decided to take him back to when he was a young child in the hope that the memories would become clearer. The memories were much clearer. We learned that he lived in Scotland and that his name was Will Kidd although he preferred to be called Willie. He was not happy at home as his father was extremely strict. He decided to leave Scotland with a friend and travel to the New World. He arranged passage to Boston in exchange for working on board ship. He was able to do this as the Captain was short of crew and had already needed to press some crew members into service. He told me that he was about 18 when he left and that the year was 1663. He also told me that something important happened but that he could not remember what it was. He thought it may be connected to royalty. I checked the date and found that Charles II granted peerage dignity to his illegitimate child, James Scott, who became Duke of Monmouth in 1663. This was important at that time because Charles II had no legitimate heirs to the throne.

At this point, I connected the name Will Kidd with the notorious Captain Kidd. I was anxious to return to the cave to see if there was any treasure involved. This time in the cave the images were much clearer. He was able to describe his clothing, shoes, and himself. It was apparent, however, that ‘her’ conscious mind was still partly involved as ‘she’ commented on how big his arms were compared to hers. Nevertheless, Captain Kidd was able to confirm that he indeed was burying treasure. He described the cave entrance as only being visible during low tide. The treasure chest was placed on the floor of the cave. Rocks from other parts of the island were collected and put layer upon layer so that they covered the chest at a slope and no one would know that that was not the floor of the cave. He also said that this was an unchartered island.

You may guess what I asked him next. “What is the latitude and longitude of the Island?” He seemed hesitant to give me those coordinates, but he eventually did. I asked him if he was going to mark the spot on a map and he said no. The crew members were not able to read navigation maps so they would not be able to return to this island on their own. If the position was not marked on a map, they could not steal the map to the treasure. He told me that he had recorded the latitude and longitude of the island on his belt. He had cut two strands of his belt to represent the coordinates. It was interesting for me to note that as my client got more into the regression, ‘her’ language became coarse and ‘her’ voice became gruff. At this point, the session ended. We made another appointment and I told her not to research Captain Kidd.

When she returned for her next appointment, she confessed that she had researched Captain Kidd as she had known nothing about him. This meant that any subsequent past life memories about Captain Kidd could be supplemented or even altered by consciously learned material. I regressed her back to Captain Kidd again. I learned that he was hired as a privateer by the British to disrupt the trade between Holland and India. They had agreed to split the booty 50 – 50 on his return. I also learned that he had married and had two children. He told me that his ship was outfitted with many cannon and that the British had taken many of his crew and replaced them with what he called wharf rats. I learned that on this mission, that took him off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, he accidently attacked a British ship (something about flying the wrong flag). On his return to Boston, he learned that he was going to be charged with piracy. It was at this point, he decided to bury some treasure.

Of the coast of Boston, he apparently buried more treasure. He had stopped at an island that had an old ruined fort. He placed the treasure next to the well on the island. He built the wall of the well around the treasure stating that no one would think to tear down the wall of the well. When he finally returned to Boston (or New York), he was imprisoned, sent back to England, convicted of piracy and hanged.

The second regression, although informative, may not have been as accurate as the first. I believe that some of what she told me was influenced by what she had read. The first regression session, although sketchy in parts, was much more authentic. It is fascinating to think that on a small island in the Caribbean there is a cave which contains a treasure chest which was buried by Captain Kidd.

About twenty five years ago at one of my Wednesday night drop-in evenings, one of the regular attendees brought her young nephew to the meeting. He was in his early twenties and I believe he lived in Calgary. The evening started with a group regression and relaxation session. It was very evident that this young man was a deep somnambulist. We decided that I would do an individual regression with him. I also decided to give him a suggestion that he would not recall or be aware of anything while he was reliving the events of a past life. I did this to ensure that his conscious mind was completely set aside. I recorded the session so that he could listen to it afterwards. What unfolded was quite amazing.

This young man from Calgary was born in Canada, had a normal Canadian accent, and was a Protestant, but not particularly religious. He went back to being a Pope during the 10th to 12th Century. As close as I can determine, he may have been Pope St. Gregory VII. He spoke with an Italian accent and his breathing was extremely labored. It turns out that he ( the Pope) suffered from TB. He said that his physicians called it the “black devil” in his lungs. It is interesting that when I took him to a point before he became Pope, his breathing was normal.

When moved him to a point before he became Pope, he was on a Crusade to Constantinople (Istanbul) with the Brits. There he told me that he had learned some Arabic. I asked him to say something in Arabic which he did. What he said in Arabic was, “There is but one God and his name is Allah and Mohamed is his Prophet. This is blaspheme!” I later verified that what he had said was Arabic.

Click here for an exerpt of his Arabic.

Achieving success with having this young man speak a language that he could not speak in his present life, I decided to see if he was able to speak any Latin. I moved him to a time just after he had been ordained as Pope. I asked him if he addressed the people and he said no I all he do is give a blessing. When asked, he gave the blessing in Latin. This too I had verified.

Click here for an exerpt of his Latin.

I asked him about the many duties he had to perform as Pope. One of the duties was to make judgments on land disputes. “Are you infallible?”, I asked. Unfortunately, this doctrine was defined dogmatically until the First Vatican Council of 1870, long after Pope Gregory’s reign. I was not aware of this at the time. Because his conscious and unconscious mind was aware of the concept, he answered as follows: “In so far as I decide what is and what is not within the church, I suppose I am infallible and in so far as I do not decide what is and what is not in the eyes of God, I suppose I am fallible — accountable.” He was able to incorporate the notion of infallibility into his frame of reference even though it was not part of the Catholic dogma at the time of Gregory VII. This inconsistency was a result of a mistake I made and to avoid any cognitive dissonance, he incorporated the idea of infallibility into his response.

At another time in the life of Gregory, I discovered that there was a planned meeting with the Patriarch of the Eastern Church. I asked him when he was meeting with this person. His answer was, “He meets with me.” When asked if he held much hope for a resolution of their differences, he said, “Yes, if he changes.”

The final scene was when I took him just beyond his death. I said to him, “Look down, can you see your body?” He answered, “I do not see that which I have my awareness in, but I see something that resembles me.” It was interesting that just prior to his death, his breathing was extremely labored, but after his death his breathing was quite normal. When asked if he had a good life, he answered, “I had an eventful life I suppose, whether it was good or bad remains to be seen.”

There were several interesting features to this regression. Most prominent was the fact that he spoke both Latin and Arabic during the regression; but he could not speak them in this life, and as best as I could determine, had not been exposed to those languages in this life. Further, his accent and pronunciation of Italian places was that of a native Italian. The phrasing he used in response to questions asked was certainly not what one would expect from a 20+ year old man from Calgary. Finally, the change in his breathing (before and after contracting TB) was dramatic. I have included two short audios – one of him speaking Latin and the other of him speaking Arabic. Unfortunately, the quality is not good as I did not have good recording equipment at that time
